Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.
Newsweek is seeking an experienced editor to help improve our coverage of the major US and international news stories of the day.
The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment. Working alongside other senior editors and reporters, they will deliver, fast, smart, accurate and fair breaking news coverage of any story that matters to a Newsweek audience, from an Elon Musk post to the fall of a city in Ukraine, a celebrity death or a court filing.
The aim is not to miss any story that matters: Beat the competition whenever possible; Displace them from the Google Top Stories carousel whenever we are not first to the news.
They will write, edit, publish and build up breaking news stories from scratch. They will also rewrite, edit and publish AP stories in Newsweek style, adding context and value where appropriate.
They will be able to live blog and also oversee live blog reporters.
They will have excellent SEO and visual storytelling skills. The Breaking News Editor must have experience of running breaking news stories, conceiving unique angles on big news stories, and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
Working hours will usually be 7am - 4pm from Monday to Friday. This position can be fully remote anywhere in the U.K.
Key Responsibilities
- Write, edit and publish breaking news stories quickly and accurately.
- Monitor newswires and selectively rewrite and publish important and interesting news stories from the wires.
- Managing people and a team where required.
- Run live blogs.
- Make sure all stories have the best headlines and lead images for maximum impact.
- Recognize newsworthy moments, stories and trends, and help make sure Newsweek is offering fresh and engaging angles.
- Ensure Newsweek delivers high-quality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
Qualifications
- Significant relevant experience in journalism, including recent experience in managing direct reports.
- Comfortable working on stories across a range of news subjects (politics, crime, health, entertainment, business, etc.)
- Experience working with newswires.
- Experience using social media and Google Trends.
- Experience working in a digital newsroom with a quasi-remote team.
- Ability to work quickly while under pressure.
- Capable of working to tight deadlines.
- Able to work fast, communicate clearly, write and edit articles quickly and accurately.
- Able to work flexible hours.
