Title: Principal Engineer, Electrical
Location: Brighton CO United States
The Role
In the Principal Electrical Engineer, Vehicle Integration position, you'll be working as part of the hardware engineering team to create safe and reliable autonomous vehicle systems. You'll be responsible for architecture and development of the electronic systems that enable scalable and reliable vehicles.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated history of contributing technically to the design and implementation of complex electronic systems in autonomous vehicles, robotic systems, or advanced sensing. They will also embrace our goal to drive zero-emission, self-driving vehicle adoption, and help us realize our potential to define, build, and lead a new category of robotic automation for the enterprise.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, prototype, and test complex electronic systems that enable advanced autonomous vehicles
- Design of AV kit power management, distribution, and sequencing, including power interfaces to the vehicle
- Evaluate new electronic components and their impact on system integration, performance, and safety
- Interface with vendors for vehicle integration and component support
- Support deployed systems, both locally and at remote customer sites
- Debug wire harnesses, electronic assemblies and installed systems
- Collaborate with product, software, test, and manufacturing teams to refine electronic architectures and eliminate design, quality, or assembly issues
- Collaborate with and support field operations teams to refine electronic architectures for diagnostic and triage feature development
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in design of complex electrical systems with a focus on autonomous vehicle, robotic, or automotive systems
- BS or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technologies, including high-voltage power systems, sensors (GPS/INS, perception, positional, etc), control systems, and communication networks.
- Proficient with hardware layers of communication protocols (TCP, UDP, CAN, I2C, SPI)
- Wire harness design and debugging experience
- Proficient with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other electrical analytical tools/equipment
- Expert soldering, crimping, and electronic prototyping experience
- Experience interfacing with suppliers and contractors for out-of-house projects and workstreams
- Experience scaling a complex electro-mechanical product
- Demonstrated initiative, excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Excellent documentation and technical writing skills
Ideal Qualifications
- Networking and operating systems background
- PCB design (preferably in Altium), assembly and rework experience, preferably in the automotive, trucking, or similarly challenging environment
- Familiarity with mechanical automotive topics
- Experience developing systems according to functional safety standards for complex electronic systems (e.g. ISO 13849, IEC 61508, MIL-STD-882, ISO 26262)
- Firmware design and implementation experience, especially in C
- Experience developing for EMI/RFI isolation and shielding (including grounding techniques)
