Job Purpose:

This position serves as an Environmental Surveillance and Oversight Program (ESOP) Project Manager for the Bureau of Regional and Lab Services. You will assist with development and implementation of the ESOP in support of SCDES' roles and responsibilities for overseeing the protection and preservation of South Carolina's environment and natural resources.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing & implementing Environmental Surveillance and Oversight Program (ESOP) monitoring projects at the Savannah River Site (SRS) for the BEHS Midlands-Aiken office.
  • Perform duties associated with environmental monitoring on SRS as related to data evaluation, report preparation, extensive field work, sampling, equipment maintenance, sample transport, sample prep, lab support and following established quality assurance/quality control and chain of custody policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical assistance and field support to other ESOP project managers as needed to help complete requirements.
  • Attend training opportunities to maintain current knowledge of applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies that pertain to environmental monitoring.
  • Perform all functions in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures manual.
  • Complete all necessary administrative task and documentation as required and requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which includes attending periodic staff meeting and training.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED, and at least three (3) years of environmental health or related experience.
  • or an associate degree in a related technical field and at least one (1) year of environmental health or related experience.
  • or bachelor's degree in a related technical field.

Note: Degrees in a related technical field include, but are not limited to, Earth sciences, chemistry, biology, physics, soil science, environmental science, mathematics, etc.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

  • Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non-traditional work environments.

  • May require:

  • Daily travel throughout the state.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

  • Participation on the Environmental Response Team and is subject to on call or call back 24/7.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring methods and associated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Knowledge of principles associated with radiological samples and source material.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
