About the role
As an Underwriter, you will classify mortality risks in a sound, objective and consistent manner by applying company guidelines and philosophies with consideration for company profitability and marketplace needs. Fundamental medical and financial underwriting and product knowledge is required along with an understanding of life insurance industry practices. Handling and approval authority are for at least $500,000 or based upon management discretion.
What you'll do in this role
- Review individual life insurance applications and underwrite standard and substandard risks within authorized limits of authority in accordance with department guidelines
- Determining whether to accept, reject or modify life insurance risks by evaluation of applicant’s medical history, financial background, insurable interest and financial need.
- Conferring with Senior and Specialist-level Underwriters, Medical Director, Director of Indv Underwriting and/or Chief Underwriter on complex cases and situations not established by practice. Obtaining second signature on cases that exceed designated underwriting authority.
- Meeting established time service standards. 85% Communicate effectively with agents/producers to explain adverse underwriting decisions, while maintaining agency relationship and encouraging future business.
- Manage key producer accounts in concert with Case Specialists. Other duties/projects as assigned.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment with decisiveness.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task effectively.
- Ability to communicate in clear and concise manner.
- Basic knowledge of underwriting principals, practices, insurance medicine, financial underwriting, field operations, product offerings and life insurance contract law.
- Impact Decisions have moderate impact to department or organization.
- Work product may be spot checked/reviewed for quality by others.
- Accountable to department and organization, may have financial impact to organization.

- Reporting Structure Generally works independently however, guidance is always available from management or senior level colleagues for atypical situations or problems.
- No supervisory responsibilities.
- Contact with Others Inside contact with: Senior level underwriters, case specialists, Medical Director, Client Services group, Sales Center – Internal Wholesalers, Regional VP’s – sales and other internal departments as needed.
- Outside contact with: Producers, IMO’s/BGA’s and Reinsurers.

Compensation
Salary Range: $ 70,600- $ 117,600 plus eligibility for annual bonus program
Who you are
- A minimum of 6 months of life insurance underwriting experience is required with a degree; a minimum of 3-5 years of life insurance underwriting experience is required without a degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of life insurance industry experience.
- Completion of Symetra’s underwriter training program or equivalent if joining from another company.
- 1 to 3 years' experience working with BGA markets
- High School diploma or equivalent experience required
